The movement has been widely criticized for its aggressive recruitment and high degree of control over its members, as well as its spiritual elitism.


In 2002 Kip McKean resigned as leader of the ICC and in 2003 moved to Portland, Oregon, where he pastors the Portland International Church of Christ, also known as the "International Christian Churches."

The movement’s membership has declined in recent years (perhaps by as much as 10-12%) because of controversy over McKean and his resignation.
