According to the New York Times, "Mr. Bourdin, born in Martinique, founded the ’’holy city of Mandarom’ in southeastern France in 1969, insisting he was immortal and meant to save the world." The group’s official site states that "Today, the Holy City of MANDAROM SHAMBHASALEM, entirely built by His Holiness the Lord HAMSAH MANARAH (Bourdin) and the Knights, is a true open air Temple for the Unity of all Religions. All traditions are represented, manifesting this universal synthesis, this unitive religion: AUMISM."
