On its web site the movement claims to be "a totally independent, international religion founded in Japan, with roots that go back into the last century." It makes the misleading claim that Perfect Liberty is "not related to any other religion such as Christianity, Shintoism or Buddhism." It further states that "Oshieoyasama is a living savior. As the spiritual head of PL Church, he is saving us everyday."
Religious scholars identify Perfect Liberty is one of several "new new" Japanese religious movements descending from Omotokyo.
