The group’s official site explains that The Zohar, "the sacred text and backbone of Kabbalah," is not "merely paper and ink. It’s the truth, and as such is alive with divine energy and is the ultimate instrument for generating miracles. An amazing number of people have reported them just from housing a copy of it in their home. By simply possessing the books, power, protection, and fulfillment came into their lives."


The group has drawn the scorn of more traditional Kabbalists because of its popularization and commercialization of occultic secrets once limited to mature Jewish males. (Its official site states that "Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, and Jews use Kabbalah to improve their spiritual experience.") Celebrities such as Madonna have also drawn sometimes-negative publicity to the movement.


The Kabbalah is the mystical Jewish system for interpreting the Old Testament, developed in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, culminating in the Zohar, and later interpreted by Isaac Luria, the Ari, in sixteenth-century Safed, a famous town in northern Israel. Today there are various Kabbalah-oriented groups in operation around the world.
