Mokichi Okada (a.k.a. "Meishu-sama") (1882-1955)
Central to the movement’s beliefs is Johrei, which is "channeled through the palm of the hand" and defined as "divine light or love light from God that purifies the spiritual body by dispelling the clouds within. Believe it or not, many Johrei members throughout the world find Johrei an effective means of filling one’s life with happiness and good health.
"Scientifically speaking, it is cosmic energy in a concentrated form. This energy is light and its source, we believe, is the Supreme God. Like the atom, this Light is invisible. Only people who have the gift of extended vision can see it. However, many feel the light as they receive Johrei, and an exquisite heat which warms the whole body. Whether people feel it or not, we believe the light is there and that it works. It is a power which changes individuals, subdues their lower nature, and returns them to their original state, that of a true child of God.
"Apart from the purification of the soul, through Johrei, light of God’s love, it also enables us to improve our destiny and eliminate diseases, worries, and sufferings. Moreover, with regular Johrei practice, everything will go favorably and we will be able to lead a life worth living."
In addition, the group’s web site affirms that "Each individual has ancestors. The further along the ancestral line an individual ascends, the more ancestors he/she has until, eventually, the number of ancestors becomes enormous. We could not be born without those innumerable ancestors.
"Our founder, Mokichi Okada indicates that each of us consists of all our ancestors. This means that lives and thoughts of these ancestors are continuously inherited into our own soul, mind and body.
"Ancestors always watch over their descendants from the spiritual realm, and they expect us to be dedicated to helping people in order to make the world better. If each of us accepts the guidance of our ancestors and strives to dedicate ourselves to helping others, we will share and enjoy with them the Light of the God, and can be guided to eternal happiness."
We are attempting to determine what (if anything) makes this group distinct from other Johrei-related movements in Japan, Brazil, and elsewhere.
