Advocates have long claimed that Transcendental Meditation is not a religious practice, but a landmark decision in the United States (in (Malnak v. Yogi, 1979) determined otherwise. The Maharishi has been described as "one of the richest religious leaders in history" and was said to be worth £2 billion at the time of his death.
Maharishi’s guru, the famed Indian Shankaracharya of the North, Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, commissioned Maharishi to be an "apostle of Hinduism" to the West; in the early 1960s, Maharishi began teaching his meditation technique in Europe and then, with much greater success, in the United States. Currently the David Lynch Foundation promotes TM in schools.
