The late Samuel Joaquín Flores, the group’s "Director Internacional," was regarded as "The Apostle of Jesus Christ" and was celebrated with a fervor bordering on worship. Indeed, according to some researchers, Samuel Joaquín was believed to have the power to forgive sins and give eternal life. La Luz del Mundo claims to be the one true church, that there is no salvation elsewhere, and that all of Christianity was lost until God called Aarón to “restore” the church in 1926. It denies the historic Christian doctrine of the Trinity and divides Jesus into two persons: Jesus (man) and Christ (God).

The group is said to have an inner group of members, known as "Los Incondicionales" (The Unconditionals), who are sworn to obey any and all orders given by its leader (formerly Samuel Joaquín). They have been accused of violent acts against dissenters and other perceived enemies.

Members are not allowed to use musical instruments in worship. Women may not wear trousers, cut their hair, or use makeup, and they must wear a veil or covering during worship. Men must have short hair. Men and women are separated during worship services.

Press reports in 2019 claim that the group has 1–5 million followers.
